Your Partner Overcalls After a Preempt and Your RHO
Raises
By Mike Lawrence
When LHO preempts, it is nice to hear partner overcalling. But it is not
nearly as nice as hearing partner make a takeout double. When partner
overcalls, you are in good shape if you have a fit. If you do not have a
fit, though, you have to decide whether to look for a fit in another suit
or whether to pass. When partner doubles, you know if a fit exists and
you can spend the rest of the auction deciding how high to go with your
fit. Believe me. It is a lot easier if the only decision you have is how
high to go. Life can be complicated if you have to search for a fit and
decide how high to go. The opponents are likely to be in the auction too
and they can damage your communication a lot. You will see what I mean
when you get to the fourth hand following.
