Looking Beyond the Obvious
By Mike Lawrence

North South conducted a routine value sequence to three notrump. West started the defense with the king of spades.

Noting that he had two spades stoppers with this lead, declarer promptly put dummy's ace on West's king of spades and went after clubs. East took the first club trick and returned the spade seven. South played the jack, losing to the queen. West continued spades, forcing South to win his ten of spades. Eventually, West got in with the ace of diamonds and cashed two more spades.

How might South have done better? Consider this question and continue.
